Virgins

Dumper and Cloggs
What draws 72 disparate characters to a car park in Hampshire on a sunny June evening? Some seem sane, some seem normal, some don’t, some brought their children, a lot brought their dogs….. Is it a desire for exercise, loneliness, the search for a mate (Oh my God!), a Masonic rite?
Who are these people? Do they feel out of place in their ill-fitting kit at the local gym? Are they trapped in unhappy marriages and desperate to get out? Are they failed orienteers looking for something less mentally taxing? Has extreme ironing become boring? Having listened to my breathless ramblings on the new high tech recorder I clearly have no answers! Madness beckons me onwards!
Another week and another plethora of virgin! We have had a Delphic oracle of them at the last two hashes. Tonight they were welcomed into the caring hands of Lord Seward and his lovely assistant Cloggs. His dulcet tones explaining the wiles and wherefores of an evening dashing around a wood made it seem the most natural thing in the world! This was nice! The more cynical of us had an idea of what lay ahead (Dumper has a love of muddy places!)
We “On outed” across the road and soon dogs, children et al were milling around on a large heath. Septic gave an early clue by standing next to one track discussing the weather (No secret trails with her and Dumper) Mayhem ensued however for the next few minutes as the FRBs chased in every direction to very little avail. A nudge from kindly Uncle Dumper sent the pack in the right direction and eventually Motox, Itsyor and Premature checked out and the pack started to spread out. The Hares had found the smelliest, deepest, widest crossing point of the stream that meandered through the forest…Shitshoveller was an early victim! Older and wiser birds headed for a narrower crossing and the visible flour the other side. Poppy led us down the correct path and Premature disappeared up another fork. A bar reversed the trail and we arrived at the next check on a main path to be greeted by Mr Trembler (Where did he come from?) Another check and another bar saw confusion reign and the pack and several large wet dogs were together again. More ankle deep mud (A bar on a bridge ignored by many) a stream and on through the wood saw Hitchhiker, Bumblebee and Millie ahead. We now arrived on open heath and devious haring continued to confuse any foolish enough to lead the trail. Old Fart, Fiddler and Slowsucker all fell foul of falses hidden in the heather before we were off and running again. Off the heath C5 failed to tell his Fs from his Ps causing a brief delay before the ON INN. Only 45 minutes which is a record in my memory and no Roman ruins or did we miss that loop!
